How to Disassemble a Toshiba Canvio HDTC615XK3B1 External Hard Drive

April 28, 2018 Jon 15 Comments

This Toshiba Canvio HDTC615XK3B1 is a handy little USB 3.0 backup external 2.5mm hard drive enclosureenclosure. It sells for less than 0 (I actually got it from BackBlaze) and isn’t a bad drive (if yours hasn’t failed that is). This is me taking apart the casing, which has no screws, to get the hard drive out. Its messy, and I break clamps, and I dont care.

I got one of these enclosures and I wanted to get the hardrive out to see if it would fit in my Playstation 4. It did! It was tight, very tight, but it fit. Unfortunantly I couldnt get the PS software to install on it. I’ve swapped other hardrives on PS4’s so I know how to do it, something was either wrong with this drive or with my PS4 itself. I have my system under warrenty but, the stock is low so I’ll wait a while before sending it away

*edit*
With the new 2.03 update to the PS4 I decided to try this drive again inside the PS4, and it works! It’s a snug fit, but it will work if you format it correctly. It works fine in rest mode too, which was my initial issue

** UPDATE ***
I’ve done another video how tight this thing is inside a PS4

The reason they used rubber spacers instead of screwing everything into the case is for rudimentary shock proofing.

Thx for this vid…had mine as a backup pc drive for over 4 years now and the 1.5tb is way overkill, I'll use the ps4's 500gb in the enclosure anyway…I just need a little space for the most important games and music from the pc. Tbh with how fast my internet is, even having backup games on there isn't even needed, but 500gb is plenty for a pure backup drive. I was really dreading spending 80-100+ bucks just for a 2tb seagate which I've heard bad things about anyway to put into the ps4 in terms of their reliability. 1.5tb should give me some breathing room for awhile…the stock hdd is full to the brim and I honestly don't even play that many games on ps4…just a couple commonly played multiplayer games I do with friends and one single player game the Last of Us and it's got 20gb remaining at the MOST….500gb was a JOKE to put in these consoles with the huge 50gb+ games, and now patches are multiple GB as well which sucks

Thanks for the info. I woke up this morning to a USB over voltage warning on my editing PC. This drive had a backup of my internal backup. I popped it apart and the USB controller was fried. I hooked it up to another external case and the drive is fine! I'll make it an internal in a new NAS setup this time I think.

Mine doesn't have the same connector; mine has the usb 3.0 connector soldered directly to the hard drive. Fuckers.
