In this video I show you how I removed the 2TB Western Digital WD20EARX drive from it’s external USB 2/3 enclosure to be left with a bare 2TB SATA drive – ready for use in my Unraid server.

My 16TB Unraid server is filling up and I need more space (who doesn’t?) Unfortunately, due to the Thailand flooding, the price of hard drives has sky rocketed over the last month or so. 2TB Western Digital green drives that were going for around are now priced at around triple that cost.

Most of the info I have read seems to indicate that it will be quite a number of months before prices ease up.

With some careful shopping at the retail level you can still find external drives for much lower prices. I found 6x 2TB drives (various brands) at several stores – all for around 0 each. I plan on removing the drives from their enclosures to use as internal SATA drives.

My checked baggage was inspected by Southwest Airlines and they took my MyBook External HDD apart, probably looking for bombs or some other nasty thing. They did not put the case back together the right way (upside down) and the clips are staggered inside so it can only go together one way. Man, they can be stupid sometimes. I don't know if they did anything to ruin yet, but hope not. Thanks for the video, which helped me with understanding how the case comes apart!

Quick question for anyone that can help. Will the hard drive I take out be readable when I install inside my computer even though I installed the smartware password program. Im hoping the answer is yes, as the smartware is part of those other boards that are in the case connected to drive.

Maybe it's just my impatience, but I only needed advice on how to open the case.  You did not discuss this until 2:30 some odd minutes to even begin to discuss this.  If your title is to remove the cover, seems to me, you'd like to get to the point, if your going to keep an audience.

+sc****r99tube hey man, could you maybe give me a little head's up please?
I've got the same in 3TB and slightly dropped it. Since then it's been reacting very slowly. Like 1Mbps.
Would it help if I took it out and switched it to SATA?
Or do you have another solution for that matter?

    Thank you in advance!! 🙂

A word of advice before you pop the external case confirm if the drive is encrypting data. You can easily check this on WD website against your model number. If it is the encryption model, back up all your data before you remove the drive from the enclosure or you wont be able to get your data off the drive later.
