Parts I used:

Crucial MX300 2TB SSD – http://snazzy.fm/mx300
PC4-19200 260-pin RAM – http://snazzy.fm/imacram
OWC Thermal Sensor for SSD – http://snazzy.fm/owcsensor

SSD Bracket – http://snazzy.fm/hddbracket
iMac Opening Tool – http://snazzy.fm/imacwheel

Footnote #1: I actually bought the mid-grade model. At the time, I wasn’t sure the CPU coolers were the same across all 27” models. I have since learned that they are; so if you buy the cheapest 5K iMac, you can do all the upgrades I mention in this video without issue.

Footnote #2: This is not an instructional disassembly video. I recommend checking the guides on iFixit. They are well illustrated—provide adequate caution and warning for tricky areas—and have a community section where people provide advice. At the time of this video, there is no updated guide for the 2017 iMac; however, it’s very similar to the 2014-2015 A1419 model. The only big difference is the screw placement on the motherboard. Just take your time finding all of the screws (one is hidden through the gold hole in the middle of the board) and you’ll be fine.

Footnote #3: A little drama that wasn’t included in the video is that the first time around, the CPU got bumped out of the socket when I screwed in the cooler, so the CPU wasn’t seated correctly and the computer didn’t boot. Upon disassembling the machine again, I saw the CPU was out of the socket and partially bent. I bent the CPU back (silicon bends easily without damaging, luckily), reinserted it into the socket, and was more careful when I tightened the CPU cooler the second time. It’s easy to wiggle the CPU out of place when installing the cooler, so be careful—and if it feels too hard to tighten the CPU socket, stop—something is wrong.

Footnote #4 – My machine’s GeekBench results: http://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/3385894

The 27″ 5K iMac is a good computer for many; however, to users that want high-end specs, Apple charges way too much money. Snazzy Labs pulls apart a base model iMac, upgrades the CPU, SSD, and RAM; showing the world the best iMac that Apple doesn’t sell! Get the world’s best iMac configuration for ,000 less than what Apple charges.

This video took weeks to plan and make. Excited to finally show it to you! It turned out even better than I expected. Please let me know what you think of the new ad integration. I tried to find a happy medium for me, the brand, but most importantly; you, the viewer. Let me know if I've succeeded or what I need to work to improve. Stay snazzy! <3

a bit late, but I don't understand why apple doesn't use the information the HDD or SSD gives on temperature instead of using sensors? I mean.. If you get CrystalDiskInfo, you get in real time the temperature of all your drives in your computer or laptop.. why add another piece of electronic when the informations is available out of the box? :/

Lol one tiny fan cooling both CPU and GPU that would be atleast +100w TDP in total, instead of spending 5000 for that, let's build a PC and get a 5k monitor xD

doesn’t the 2017 model iMac support e-gpu? i think it would be worth the money spent if an GTX1080 is attached and maybe it would outperform an incredibly expensive iMac Pro!

SATAIII VS PCI-Express – Cheaper but also 6x slower in this case.

If I had $3000 and needed a new Mac I would probably do the same thing tbh. It should be much harder than just building a pc, just need to be careful with that display

This video is full of misleading information. He did not save $1800. To make it the same he would’ve needed to use a 2TB 960 Pro m.2 drive, which costs over $1,000.

He also states that Apple buys the worst chips or he got lucky? No. He used different thermal paste, better but could have a shorter life. Better cooling means a quieter and better performing machine. The 8% lines up perfectly with results from MacBook Pros and even PCs when swapping thermal paste. H**l The silicon lottery has nothing to do with this. Apple and Intel promise a base and boost clock, and macOS does not let you surpass that. Changing the CPU doesn’t affect this either.

Also as with many of his videos, there is flawed testing. To get accurate numbers, he needs to run the fan(s) at max speed. Easy to do in the macOS environment with Macs Fan Control.

Also regarding the Mac Pro? More misleading information there as well. It doesn’t support 5K why? Because it’s thunderbolt 2, not 3. Thunderbolt 2 cannot drive 5K@60. It can only drive 4K@60. So duh, of course it doesn’t support a 5K display. ITS ALSO A 2013 MACHINE! 5K@60 wasn’t even a thought then. 4K was barely prevalent.

And comparing results between the computers? A 4-5 year difference in tech is hardly fair. It seems he fails to understand core count and clock speed are not the only important factors in performance, for CPUs and GPUs.

He even admits that he pulled the average Geekbench results. The average user is running other s**t in the background because they don’t know exactly what they’re doing.

The insolence in many of these videos is astounding.

8% performance improvement could come from better thermal grease. Apple stock thermal compound sucks…

Ehm, never trust screen resolutions shown by MacOS. Since Apple launched their so called "retina" displays they confuse us with wrong screen resolution data. If you have a MacBook Pro with 2560 * 1600 pixels – which it makes use of indeed – it will tell you "1280 * 800" pixels which is just wrong. Even on a 5 k iMac it may tell you "2560 * 1440" even if it uses full 5120 * 2880 pixels. To make confusion complete Apples own software make use of false pixel data. The Preview application in 100 % view will NOT show you 1 pixel of the display for 1 pixel of your photo. No. It will show you 4 (!) pixels of your display as 1 pixel of your photo. And so on.
